Ericsson has been selected to deploy Bharti Airtel’s 4G network in Delhi, while also announcing a broadcast and media services contract with Image Nation in Abu Dhabi.
The four-year contract with Bharti Airtel sees Ericsson roll out the first LTE-FDD network in India’s capital.
Ericsson will supply a range of radio equipment under the agreement, including its base station units, as well as 2G and 3G-compatible LTE RAN software.
The deployment will help Bharti Airtel cope with growing mobile broadband traffic in the city and boost performance for subscribers across web browsing, video and other data services, Ericsson said.
The company has previously partnered with Bharti Airtel to deploy 4G networks in four other telecom “circles” – or provinces – in India.
Bharti Airtel CTO Abhay Savargaonkar said: “The Delhi market is currently experiencing a rapid increase in the uptake of data-centric services. As market leaders, we at Airtel are deeply committed towards delivering the best data experience for smartphone users and have made investment in high speed 4G network to improve the data experience of the customer.”
The operator has also extended its 3G contract with Sweden-based Ericsson by another four years.
The new agreement sees the vendor roll out 3G services across eight circles in India in the UMTS 2100MHz and 900MHz bands. The deal also covers the supply and installation of WCDMA Radio Access Networks (RAN) for Bharti Airtel, in addition to managed services.
Meanwhile in the UAE, Ericsson has partnered with media company Image Nation Abu Dhabi to launch a new Arabic-language TV channel.
Under the contract, Ericsson will provide a range of managed services to assist with the launch of Quest Arabiya, set to launch in Abu Dhabi in Q4 this year.
The contract covers playout, media preparation, media management and archive services for the “pan-regional” channel, which the vendor will perform from the media hub it established in Abu Dhabi in February.
Carl Von Doussa, General Manager of Channels at Image Nation, explained that outsourcing these services to Ericsson would allow the media company to focus on its “core expertise” of delivering content.

Ericsson’s continued play into the media space is an attempt by the vendor to move away from traditional networks and realise new profits.
